In-Camera Zoom vs. Post Zoom – Which One to Use?

Zooming in filmmaking can be done in-camera (optical zoom) or in post (digital zoom). Both have their uses, but knowing when to use each can make a big difference in quality.

In-Camera Zoom (Optical Zoom)

Best image quality – No pixelation since the lens does the work.
More natural movement – Depth and perspective shift realistically.
Ideal for cinematic shots – Preserves clarity and realism.

Downside? Requires a good zoom lens and needs to be executed perfectly while shooting.

Post Zoom (Digital Zoom)

Quick fixes – Adjust framing in post without a reshoot.
Good for indie projects – No need for expensive zoom lenses.
Subtle push-ins – Adds motion to static shots for a professional touch.

Warning: Overdoing it can lead to pixelation, especially in lower resolutions.

How to Use Post Zoom in DaVinci Resolve

If you need to zoom in post, DaVinci Resolve’s Dynamic Zoom makes it easy:

1️⃣ Go to the "Edit" tab.
2️⃣ Open "Inspector".
3️⃣ Enable "Dynamic Zoom".
4️⃣ Adjust the green (start) and red (end) frames in the viewer to control the zoom area.
5️⃣ Use "Ease" settings for a smoother transition.
6️⃣ Click "Swap" to reverse the zoom direction.

Use it subtly—too much digital zoom can make footage look low-quality.

Final Thoughts

If you can, get the zoom right in-camera for the best results. But if you need flexibility, post zoom can help—just don’t push it too far.
